We can’t help but notice the new tool of the conservative leaders in the Arizona Legislature is the referendum. It seems that more often than not, when our lawmakers run up against an idea that demands leadership and legislative direction, we’re seeing an increasing call to put the question on the ballot. It’s a tactic that forces anyone opposed to the idea to answer why they are against people having their say. Examples of this strategy include the redistricting debate that raged late last year. An argument was made to introduce legislation returning the power of drawing these boundaries back to our professional politicians in Phoenix — and the initiative included putting the question on an upcoming ballot for the voters to decide. The tactic reared its head again this week when lawmakers considered a bill calling for the elimination of all photo-enforcement of traffic laws in Arizona. Again, if the bill makes it through the Legislature and the Governor, it would be a question decided by voters on the November ballot. But consider for a moment the drawbacks that are part of putting so many questions up for referendum. Language becomes essential...

Recent developments have started me mourning all over again, at the loss of our congressional representative. Even before Ms. Giffords was attacked, and thereby elevated to the status of hero/saint, she seemed to be an honest, middle-of-the-road, hard-working person, dedicated to constituent service and the welfare of the citizenry. Now, here comes Jesse Kelly again, pandering and willing to say whatever he assumes will...

What House Speaker Andy Tobin has decided to do by re-doing the congressional district maps and putting them before the voters is nothing short of gerrymandering and it will be in the courts for years. Gerrymandering is illegal.
Gov. Brewer did what a lot of us would like to do. She speaks for all of us who are angry with Obama’s policies. While he is out and about courting the Hispanic vote, he’s thumbed his...

To the Editor: As a participant in the Douglas meeting referred to by Robert Fleming, I want to set the record straight. The conversation reported on was not about voter fraud at the polls but about the voter registration rolls as maintained by Christine Rhodes, precinct committee person, who used the rolls to contact voters in 2010 and found them to be filled... |

To the Editor: In this day and age of news covering natural catastrophes, economic disasters, polarization of public interests, serious educational challenges, it was my personal experience this evening around 4:30 p.m. to report that great kindness, selflessness and compassion are alive and well in Sierra Vista in the person of four caring citizens. I was... |

To the Editor: It is a rare blessing when people and/or organizations donate generously, and that has proven to be the case with the Bisbee 1000. As the principal of Bisbee High School, to say that I have been delighted with the support and donations the Bisbee 1000 has made to our school would be an understatement. When I began to examine the historical relationship... |

To the Editor: Hello friends. My name is George McGuire and I am a nurse/caregiver here in Sierra Vista. About a month ago I came across a devotional wherein the author stated that it would be uplifting to see newspaper articles about how God has glorified Himself in various circumstances in His people’s lives. It piqued my interest and I contacted Herald publisher Phillip... |

To the Editor: Matt Hickman’s Sunday column titled “Why don’t conservatives care about the physical world?” was wilder than a Ryne Duren pressbox warmup pitch. He knows not the basic tenants of true conservatism and is so far off base that he is, again, picked off first. A true conservative cannot be boxed and sold off the shelf as a non-caring,... |
